Activities: “To become” - How to express change in Japanese?

Exercise 1: Fill in the blanks

Choose the appropriate word from the word bank below, and fill in the blanks with its appropriate forms.

  1. 明日は なります。
    Ashita wa ... narimasu.
    It will be cold tomorrow.

  2. たくさん練習したから、日本語がなりました。
    Takusan renshū shita kara, nihongo ga ... narimashita.
    Since I practiced a lot, my Japanese got better.

  3. 将来 なりたいです。
    Shōrai ... naritai desu.
    I want to be a teacher in the future.

  4. このゲームは何度もしたから、なりました。
    Kono gēmu wa nando mo shita kara, ... narimashita.
    Since I played this game many times, it became not interesting.

  5. 家の近くのコンビニがなくなったから、 なりました。
    Ie no chikaku no konbini ga nakunatta kara, ... narimashita.
    Since the convenience store nearby my home shut down, it became not convenient.

Exercise 2: Pick the best option

For each problem, choose the appropriate bolded phrase:

  1. パーティに行きたかったけど、宿題がたくさんあるので、

    行かないことに ( ／ )。 Pātī ni ikitakatta kedo, shukudai ga takusan aru node,

    ikanai koto ni ( narimashita / shimashita ). I wanted to go to the party, but I have a lot of homework, so I decided not to go.

  2. 将来日本で働きたいから、毎日日本のニュースを

    見ることに (

    ／ )。 Shōrai nihon de hatarakitai kara, mainichi nihon no nyūsu o miru koto ni ( natteimasu / shiteimasu ).

    Since I want to work in Japan in the future, I make it a rule to watch Japanese news every day.

  3. サッカーは、１１人でプレーすることに ( ／ )。

    Sakkā wa jūichi nin de purē suru koto ni ( natteimasu / shiteimasu ).

    Soccer is supposed to be played by 11 players.

  4. 毎日ピアノを練習したら、上手にひける ( ／ ) なりました。

    Mainichi piano o renshū shitara, jōzu ni hikeru ( yō ni / koto ni ) narimashita.

    After practicing the piano every day, I have become able to play it well.

  5. 来月から、新しい会社で働く ( ／ ) なりました。

    Raigetsu kara, atarasii kaisha de hataraku ( yō ni / koto ni ) narimashita.

    It has been decided that I will work for a new company starting next month.

Exercise 3: Complete the dialogues

Complete the following dialogues with your own answers. You may use words from the word bank.

    1. アパートや家のルールはありますか。
      Apāto ya ie no rūru wa arimasu ka.
      Do you have rules for your apartment or house?

    2. ことになっています。
      ... koto ni natte imasu.
      I’m supposed to ... .

    1. 健康のために、何かしていますか。
      Kenkō no tame ni, nanika shiteimasu ka.
      Do you do anything for your health?

    2. ことにしています。
      ... koto ni shiteimasu.
      I make it a rule to ... .

    1. 先生、日本語が上手になりたいんですけど、どうしたらいいですか。
      Sensei, nihongo ga jōzu ni naritai n desu kedo, dōshitara iidesu ka.
      Teacher, I want to get better at Japanese. What should I do?

    2. そうですね。じゃ、ようにしてみたらどうですか。
      Sōdesu ne. Ja, ... yō ni shitemitara dōdesuka. Hmm. Then, why don’t you try to make an effort to ... ?
