Activity 1: Demonstratives in action

Part 1: Umbrella

You are looking for your umbrella. Look at the picture below and fill in the blanks.

  1. Pointing at umbrella 1:

    • You:

      はだれのかさですか。
      ___ wa dare no kasa desu ka.
      Whose umbrella is ___ one?

    • Ken:

      はたかしのかさです。
      ___ wa Takashi no kasa desu.
      ___ one is Takashi's umbrella.

  2. Pointing at umbrella 2:

    • You:

      はだれのかさですか。
      ___ wa dare no kasa desu ka.
      Whose umbrella is ___ one?

    • Ken:

      はじゅんこのかさです。
      ___ wa Junko no kasa desu.
      ___ one is Junko's umbrella.

  3. Pointing at umbrella 3:

    • You:

      はだれのかさですか。
      ___ wa dare no kasa desu ka.
      Whose umbrella is ___ one?

    • Ken:

      はあなたのかさです。
      ___ wa anata no kasa desu.
      ___ one is your umbrella.

Part 2: Coffee

You are looking for your coffee. Look at where various cups of coffee are located, and fill in the blanks.

  1. Pointing at coffee 1:

    • You:

      コーヒーはだれのコーヒーですか。
      ___ kōhī wa dareno kōhī desu ka.
      Whose coffee is ___ coffee?

    • Lin:

      コーヒーはみちこのコーヒーです。
      ___ kōhī ha Michiko no kōhī desu.

  2. Pointing at coffee 2:

    • You:

    • Lin:

  3. You decide that you want to ask which coffee is yours:

    • You:

      私のコーヒーはコーヒーですか。
      Watashi no kōhī wa ___ kōhī desu ka.
      Which coffee is my coffee?

    • Lin:

      コーヒーです。
      Kōhī wa ___ kōhī desu.
      Your coffee is ___ coffee.

Activity 2: Last weekend

You and your colleague are talking about the past weekend. Fill in the blanks with the appropriate demonstrative words.

  • Your colleague:

    週末はどうでしたか。
    Shūmatsu wa dōdeshita ka.
    How was the weekend?

  • You:

    面白かったです。映画に行きました。映画を観る前に、飲み物を買ったんですが、時、田中さんを見ました。
    Omoshirokatta desu. Eiga ni ikimashita. Eiga o mirumae ni nomimono o kattanndesu ga, ___ toki Tanaka san o mimashita.
    It was fun. I went to a movie. Before watching the movie, I bought a drink, but at that time, I saw Mr. Tanaka.

  • Your colleague:

    ああ、人は映画が好きで、よく映画を観に行きますね。を観ましたか。
    ___ hito wa eiga ga sukide, yoku eiga o miniikimasu ne. ___ o mimashita ka.
    Oh, that person likes movies and goes to see movies often. Which one did you see?

  • You:

    アバターです。知っていますか。
    Abatā desu. Shitteimasu ka.
    Avatar. Do you know (it)?

  • Your colleague:

    ああ、知っています。はいい映画ですね。
    Aa, shitteimasu. ___ wa ii eiga desu ne
    Ah (yes), I know (it). That one is a good movie, isn’t it?

  • You:

    ええ、よかったです。
    Ē, yokatta desu.
