Common separable prefixes in German (with examples)

aus-	aussprechen Translation: to pronounce	Martina spricht spanische Wörter sehr gut aus. Translation: Martina pronounces Spanish words very well.
bei-	beitragen Translation: to contribute	Ihr tragt viel zu dem Thema bei. Translation: You contribute a lot to this topic.
ein-	einsammeln Translation: to collect	Wir sammelten die restlichen Gegenstände ein. Translation: We collected the remaining items.

Common inseparable prefixes in German

ent-	entscheiden Translation: to decide	Monika entscheidet sich für dieses Armband. Translation: Monika decides in favor of this bracelet.
er-	erklären Translation: to explain	Erklären Sie mir bitte diese Gleichung! Translation: Please explain this equation to me!
ge-	gewöhnen Translation: to get used to	Ihr gewöhnt euch langsam an die kalte Jahreszeit. Translation: You're gradually becoming used to the cold season.
miss-	missfallen Translation: to displease	Deine Antwort missfällt mir sehr. Translation: I really dislike your response.
ver-	vergessen Translation: to forget	Annette vergaβ ihre Schlüssel zu Hause. Translation: Annette forgot her keys at home.

German prefixes that can either be separable or inseparable

These prefixes are separable in some verbs and inseparable in others. We’ll give an example of an inseparable verb first, then a separable one.

durch-	durchsuchen Translation: to search	Die Polizei durchsucht die Wohnung. Translation: The police search the flat.
durch-	durchrasen Translation: to race through	Anton rast mit 100 km/h durch die Stadt. Translation: Anton speeds through town at 100 km/h.
hinter-	hinterlassen Translation: to leave, to bequeath	Der Groβvater hinterlässt seinen Kindern das Haus. Translation: Grandfather bequeaths the house to his children.
hinter-	hinterhaken Translation: to follow up	Der Reporter hakte bei der Aussage dieses Politikers hinter. Translation: The reporter followed up on this politician's statement.
über-	überfallen Translation: to hold up	Die Räuber überfallen die Touristen. Translation: The robbers hold up the tourists.
über-	übergehen Translation: to move on	Gehen wir nun zum nächsten Punkt über! Translation: Let's move on to the next item!
um-	umschreiben Translation: to paraphrase	Sie umschreibt das Problem mit wenigen Worten. Translation: She paraphrases the problem in a few words.
um-	(sich) umsehen Translation: to look around	Monika sieht sich in Berlin ein bisschen um. Translation: Monika has a look around Berlin.
unter-	unterstellen Translation: to insinuate	Ihr unterstellt mir, nicht ehrlich zu sein. Translation: You insinuate that I am dishonest.
unter-	unterbringen Translation: to accommodate	Wir bringen unsere Gäste im Nebenzimmer unter. Translation: We put our guests in the adjacent room.
voll-	vollbringen Translation: to accomplish, to perform	Der Turner vollbringt eine glänzende Leistung. Translation: The gymnast gives a brilliant performance.
voll-	(sich) vollstopfen Translation: to cram, to stuff	Erik stopfte sich schon heute Morgen mit Süβigkeiten voll. Translation: Eric already stuffed himself with sweets this morning.
wider-	widerfahren Translation: to happen, to befall	Den Reisenden widerfuhr ein groβes Unglück. Translation: A great misfortune befell the travellers.
wider-	widerhallen Translation: to echo	Die Stimme des Wanderers hallte von der Felswand wider. Translation: The hiker's voice echoed from the face of the rock.
wieder-	wiederholen Translation: to repeat	Das kleine Mädchen wiederholt das Gedicht. Translation: The little girl repeats the poem.
wieder-	(sich) wiedersehen Translation: to see again	Wir sahen uns nach drei Jahren endlich wieder. Translation: They finally saw each other again after three years.
