German verbs that take two objects

The following German verbs take two objects:

a direct object, usually in the accusative case.
an indirect object in the dative case.

Verbs like these are called “double-object verbs” or “ditransitive verbs.”


Ditransitive verbs in German
geben Translation: to give	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Gib mir eine Minute, ich komme gleich. Translation: Give me a minute, I'll be right there.
schicken Translation: to send	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Hast du deinem Chef auch eine Einladung geschickt? Translation: Did you send your boss an invitation, too?
kaufen Translation: to buy	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Ich werde meiner Schwester ein Geschenk kaufen. Translation: I will buy a gift for my sister.
schreiben Translation: to write	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Schreiben Sie mir, wenn Sie einen Termin vereinbaren möchten. Translation: Write me if you would like to make an appointment.
schenken Translation: to give as a gift	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Schenkt ihr euren Kindern etwas zu Weihnachten? Translation: Do you give your children something for Christmas?
stehlen Translation: to steal	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Mir wurde auf meiner Reise die Brieftasche gestohlen. Translation: My wallet was stolen from me during my trip.
zeigen Translation: to show	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Zeigst du mir, wie es geht? Translation: Will you show me how to do it?
bringen Translation: to bring	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Der Milchmann bringt uns einmal pro Woche die Milch vor die Haustür. Translation: The milkman brings us milk to our doorstep once a week.
leihen Translation: to lend	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Leihst du uns deinen neuen Grill aus? Translation: Will you lend us your new grill?
beibringen Translation: to teach	ditransitive verbaccusativedative High five ist ein Hundetrick, den Sie Ihrem Liebling gut beibringen können. Translation: High five is a dog trick that you can teach your pet well.
erzählen Translation: to tell	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Basil erzählt seinem besten Freund von seinem Urlaub. Translation: Basil tells his best friend about his vacation.
senden Translation: to send	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Senden Sie uns bis Ende Woche Ihre Bewerbungsunterlagen. Translation: Send us your application documents by the end of the week.
erklären Translation: to explain	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Mein Vater erklärt mir jeden Sonntag unseren Nachthimmel. Translation: My father explains our night sky to me every Sunday.
vorschlagen Translation: to suggest	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Ich werde meiner Kollegin ein neues Projekt vorschlagen. Translation: I will suggest a new project to my colleague.
verkaufen Translation: to sell	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Der Händler hat dem zufriedenen Kunden ein neues Auto verkauft. Translation: The dealer sold the satisfied customer a new car.
überlassen Translation: to hand over	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Überlass das mir! Translation: Leave that to me!
vorstellen Translation: to introduce	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Wann stellst du uns einmal den neuen Austausschüler vor? Translation: When will you introduce us to the new exchange student?
überreichen Translation: to hand over, to present	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Der Bürgermeister wird dem Preisträger eine Auszeichnung überreichen. Translation: The mayor will present an award to the honoree.
empfehlen Translation: to recommend	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Der Arzt empfiehlt seinem Patienten, regelmäßig Sport zu treiben. Translation: The doctor recommends to his patient to exercise regularly.
abnehmen Translation: to take off	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Darf ich Ihnen Ihren Mantel abnehmen? Translation: May I take (from you) your coat?
kochen Translation: to cook	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Kochst du uns morgen deinen leckeren Kartoffelsalat? Translation: Will you cook us your delicious potato salad tomorrow?
verbieten Translation: to prohibit	ditransitive verbaccusativedative Meine Eltern verbieten mir, spät am Abend ausgehen. Translation: My parents don't allow me to go out late at night.

German verbs that take only an indirect object

The following verbs are intransitive, as they have no direct object. However, they are often used with an indirect object in the dative case. These are often actions done for someone else’s benefit.

zustimmen Translation: to agree	verbdative Wir stimmen ihr voll und ganz zu. Translation: We agree with her completely.
glauben Translation: to believe	verbdative Ich glaube dir kein Wort! Translation: I don't believe a word you say!
danken Translation: to thank	verbdative Ich möchte meiner Lehrerin für ihre Unterstützung danken. Translation: I would like to thank my teacher for her support.
grautlieren Translation: to congratulate	verbdative Wir gratulieren dir herzlich zu deinem Geburtstag! Translation: We congratulate you on your birthday!
begegnen Translation: to encounter	verbdative Wem bist du beim Einkaufen begegnet? Til Schweiger? Translation: Who did you meet while shopping? Til Schweiger?
einfallen Translation: to come to mind	verbdative Das Wort liegt mir auf der Zunge, aber es fällt mir einfach nicht ein! Translation: The word is on the tip of my tongue, but I just can't think of it!
verzeihen Translation: to forgive	verbdative Ich verzeihe dir. Translation: I forgive you.
fehlen Translation: to miss	verbdative Im Ausland fehlt mir stets das deutsche Essen. Translation: I always miss German food when I'm abroad.
passieren Translation: to happen	verbdative Das war ein übler Sturz. Zum Glück ist dir nichts passiert. Translation: That was a nasty fall. Fortunately, nothing happened to you.
helfen Translation: to help	verbdative Entschuldigen Sie bitte, können Sie mir helfen? Translation: Excuse me, can you help me?
gefallen Translation: to please	verbdative Die Show gefällt den Zuschauern. Translation: The show pleases the viewers.
gehören Translation: to belong	verbdative Wem gehört das? Translation: Who does this belong to?
antworten Translation: to answer	verbdative Paula ist gerade beschäftigt. Sie wird ihrem Chef später antworten. Translation: Paula is busy right now. She will answer her boss later.
wehtun Translation: to hurt	verbdative Es tut mir weh, zu sehen, wie du traurig bist. Translation: It hurts me to see you sad.
zuhören Translation: to listen	verbdative Hörst du mir überhaupt zu? Translation: Are you even listening to me?
folgen Translation: to follow	verbdative Folgen Sie mir bitte. Ich zeige Ihnen den Weg zum Bahnhof. Translation: Please follow me. I will show you the way to the station.
raten Translation: to advise	verbdative Mein bester Freund hat mir geraten, mehr Zeit für mich selbst zu nehmen. Translation: My best friend advised me to take more time for myself.
gehorchen Translation: to obey	verbdative Seine Zunge gehorchte ihm nicht ganz, weil er so nervös war. Translation: His tongue didn't quite obey him because he was so nervous.
schmecken Translation: to taste	verbdative Diese Suppe schmeckt mir nicht! Translation: I do not like this soup!

The following are adjectives that are often used with the dative case in German.

kalt Translation: cold	adjectivedative Mir ist kalt. Kannst du das Fenster schliessen? Translation: I'm cold. Can you close the window?
heiß Translation: hot	adjectivedative Mir ist heiß. Kannst du das Fenster öffnen? Translation: I am hot. Can you open the window?
übel Translation: sick	adjectivedative Wird dir auf der Achterbahn auch immer so übel? Translation: Do you also get this nauseous on the roller coaster?
schlecht Translation: sick	adjectivedative Auf dem Schiff wird mir praktisch jedes Mal schlecht. Translation: On the ship, I get sick practically every time.
schwindlig Translation: dizzy	adjectivedative Bei deinem Sprechtempo wird einem ja schwindelig! Translation: Your pace of speech makes one dizzy!
ähnlich Translation: similar	adjectivedative Meine Tochter ist dir sehr ähnlich. Translation: My daughter is very much like you.
dankbar Translation: grateful	adjectivedative Wir werden euch für ewig dankbar sein! Translation: We will be forever grateful to you!
klar Translation: clear	adjectivedative Oh nein, jetzt habe ich den Flug verpasst. Mir war nicht klar, dass ich eine Viertelstunde früher am Gate sein sollte. Translation: Oh no, now I have missed the flight. To me, it wasn’t clear that I was supposed to be at the gate fifteen minutes earlier.
peinlich Translation: embarrassing	adjectivedative Mir ist das echt total peinlich, aber ich weiß nicht, wie ich bei meinem Handy meine eigene Nummer herausfinde. Translation: I'm really totally embarrassed, but I don't know how to find out my own number on my cell phone.
bekannt Translation: familiar	adjectivedative Wie Ihnen allen bekannt ist, planen wir zurzeit unseren Börsengang. Translation: As you are all aware, we are currently planning our IPO.
böse Translation: angry	adjectivedative Bitte, sei mir nicht böse! Translation: Please, don't be angry with me!
überlegen Translation: superior	adjectivedative In einzelnen Spezialbereichen werden KI-Technologien dem Menschen weit überlegen sein. Translation: In individual specialized areas, AI technologies will be far superior to humans.
bewusst Translation: aware	adjectivedative Du willst morgen wandern gehen? Bist du dir bewusst, dass der Wetterbericht morgen starken Regen und Gewitter vorhersagt? Translation: You want to go hiking tomorrow? Are you aware that the weather forecast predicts heavy rain and thunderstorms tomorrow?
