Study Resource: List of genitive prepositions in German with examples

*Can optionally be used with the dative case, generally in colloquial German.
**Can also be used as a postposition (i.e. after the noun), but in this use the noun or pronoun will be in another case, usually the accusative.

Translation: The house is located far from the street.
abzüglich
Translation: less, minus
Abzüglich des Rabatts kostet es 100 Euro.
Translation: Minus the rebate, it costs 100 euros.
angesichts
Translation: in the face of
Angesichts der Gefahr zogen wir uns zurück.
Translation: In the face of the danger, we retreated.
anhand
Translation: on the basis of, by means of
Anhand des Geruchs fand der Hund die Spur.
Translation: By means of the smell, the dog found the track.
anlässlich
Translation: on the occasion of
Anlässlich ihres Firmenjubiläums gratulieren wir Ihnen.
Translation: On the occasion of your company anniversary, we congratulate you.
(an)statt
Translation: instead of
[An]statt des Steaks servieren wir lieber etwas Vegetarisches.
Translation: Instead of the steak, we should serve something vegetarian.
anstelle / an Stelle
Translation: instead of
Anstelle / An Stelle einer Email habe ich eine SMS geschickt.
Translation: Instead of an email I sent a text message.
aufgrund / auf Grund
Translation: because of, due to
Aufgrund / Auf Grund der Trockenheit ist der Wasserverbrauch gestiegen.
Translation: Because of the dryness our water usage increased.
außerhalb
Translation: outside of
Das Anwesen liegt etwas außerhalb der Stadt.
Translation: The estate is located a bit outside of the city.
ausschließlich
Translation: excluding
Der Kosten sind ausschließlich des Trinkgeldes berechnet worden.
Translation: The costs were calculated excluding the tip.
beiderseits
Translation: to both sides of
Beiderseits der Straße wuchsen Bäume.
Translation: On both sides of the street trees grew.
bezüglich
Translation: in regard to, concerning
Ich habe mich bezüglich Ihrer Anfrage erkundigt.
Translation: I inquired with regard to your request.
binnen*
Translation: within

Translation: Within one year we will complete the project.

diesseits
Translation: on this side of

Translation: Is that including the costs for the luggage?
entlang***
Translation: alongside of

Translation: We walked carefully alongside the railroad embankment to the village.
exklusive
Translation: excluding
Der Preis ist exklusive des Einbaus.
Translation: The price is exclusive of the installation.

Translation: Far away from the city one can hear the birds.
hinsichtlich
Translation: in regard to, concerning

Translation: owing to, as a result of

Translation: As a result of the programming error, the system collapsed.

Translation: in the middle of

Translation: Please come to my office within the next hour.

Translation: What lies beyond the sea?

Translation: by virtue of, by the strength of

längs(seits)
Translation: alongside of
Längs(seits) der Straße kann man noch den alten Kanal sehen.
Translation: Alongside of the street, one can still see the old canal.
laut*
Translation: according to
Laut der Anleitung soll man diesen roten Knopf drücken.
Translation: According to the manual, one is supposed to press this red button.
mangels
Translation: for lack of, for want of
Mangels eines funktionierenden Tablets druckte er den Artikel zum Lesen aus.
Translation: For lack of a functioning tablet, he printed the article to read it.
mithilfe / mit Hilfe
Translation: with the help of, by means of
Mithilfe eines Schraubenziehers ist das schnell repariert.
Translation: With the help of a screwdriver, this can be repaired quickly.
mittels*
Translation: by means of, by dint of, via
Mittels unseres Fachwissens können wir den Schaden beheben.
Translation: By means of our expertise we repair the damage.
nördlich
Translation: to the north of
Die Burg liegt nördlich der Stadt
Translation: The castle is located to the north of the city.
oberhalb
Translation: above
Der Sportler hatte Schmerzen oberhalb des Knies.
Translation: The athlete had pain above the knee.
östlich
Translation: to the east of
Östlich meines Hauses war früher die Bibliothek.
Translation: To the east of my house used to be the library.
seitens
Translation: on the part of
Seitens meiner Chefin bestehen keine Einwände.
Translation: On the part of my boss, there are no objections.
südlich
Translation: to the south of
Südlich des Bundeslandes Sachsen-Anhalt liegt Bayern.
Translation: To the south of the state of Saxony-Anhalt is Bavaria.

Trotz des Unfalls fuhr das Auto noch ausgezeichnet.
Translation: Despite the accident, the car still ran excellently.
ungeachtet
Translation: notwithstanding

Translation: The weather notwithstanding, we went for a walk.
unterhalb
Translation: below, beneath
Die Krypta liegt unterhalb der Kirche.
Translation: The crypt is located underneath the church.

Translation: I think that it is not far from the museum.

Translation: on the part of

Translation: in favor of

Translation: The judgment was in favor of the plaintiff.

Translation: to the disadvantage of
Der Richter entschied zuungunsten des Angeklagten.
Translation: The judge decided to the disadvantage of the defendant.
zuzüglich*
Translation: in addition to
Zuzüglich des Frühstücks kostet es 80 Euro.
Translation: In addition to the breakfast, it costs 80 euros.
zwecks
Translation: for the purpose of
Zwecks schneller Bearbeitung schicke ich Ihnen die Dokumente im Anhang.
Translation: For the purpose of a quick processing, I am sending you the documents as an attachment.
