Activities: “How to use definite articles in German?”

Activity 1: Baking a cake

Tom and Mary are planning to bake a cake, but Tom notices that they forgot several ingredients. When they set out for the store, they realize that they have no way to get there. Help them out by choosing the correct definite articles for their conversation.

  • Tom: Hey Mary, ich glaube, wir haben Zutaten (pl) vergessen!
  • Mary: Was haben wir vergessen? Butter (f) ist da, Zucker (m) ist da, aber wir haben Erdbeeren (pl) vergessen.
  • Tom: Oh, und Salz (n) ist auch nicht da. Einkaufsliste (f) war nicht komplett.
  • Mary: Gib mir mal bitte Einkaufsliste. Weißt du, Schokolade (f) fehlt auch. Ofen (m) ist schon heiß, aber wir können nicht backen.
  • Tom: Okay, dann gehen wir noch mal einkaufen. Gib Verkäuferin (f) einfach Einkaufsliste und frag sie, wo Waren (pl) im Regal sind.
  • Mary: Im Supermarkt ist heute ein Verkäufer, nicht Verkäuferin von gestern.
  • Tom: Ja, dann gib Verkäufer (m) Einkaufsliste (f).
  • Mary: Okay. Ist Tank (m) Autos (n) voll?
  • Tom: Nein, Tankstelle (f) war geschlossen. Aber Fahrrad (n) geht doch auch.
  • Mary: Leider ist Reifen (m) Fahrrads kaputt. Dann nehmen wir Bus (m).
  • Tom: Internet (n) sagt, dass heute kein Bus mehr kommt. Ist Taxi (n) eine Option?
  • Mary: Problem (n) ist nicht Existenz (f) Taxis, sondern Geld (n). Es ist viel zu teuer.
  • Tom: Weißt du, wir backen heute einfach nicht Kuchen (m).

Activity 2: Kim’s Translations

Our assistant Kim translated a few short sentences into German. But alas, Kim made quite a few mistakes with the definite articles! Help us by correcting the definite article where necessary based on the information given in brackets. Rewrite the text from the text boxes to see if you can help her get it right!
