Suffixes used to nominalize verbs in German

The following endings are often used to turn German verbs into nouns:


Suffix	Gender of noun	Example
-ung	feminine	werben meaning to advertise → die Werbung meaning advertisement
-schaft	feminine	erben meaning to inherit → die Erbschaft meaning inheritance
-nis	neuter	sich ereignen meaning to occur → das Ereignis meaning occurrence
-tum	neuter	wachsen meaning to grow → das Wachstum meaning growth

Full declension of an adjective acting as a noun

In the table below, the adjective bekannt meaning known, familiar is being used as a noun, die Bekannte meaning a familiar person, female.

The endings match the endings of the feminine adjective bekannte, but the adjective is capitalized throughout. Like the adjective bekannte, the endings you use will depend on the article the adjective follows.
