Verbs for actions


Verb	Example
anfangen Translation: to start	Peter fängt an zu nerven. Translation: Peter is starting to get annoying.
aufhören Translation: to stop	Ich habe aufgehört, Deutsch zu lernen. Translation: I've stopped learning German.
beginnen Translation: to start	Wir wollen (damit) beginnen, den Text zu analysieren. Translation: We want to start analyzing the text.
bitte Translation: to ask	Ich bitte dich, dies zu akzeptieren. Translation: I ask you to accept this.
probieren Translation: to try	Könntet ihr bitte probieren, leiser zu sein? Translation: Could you please try to be quieter?
sich weigern Translation: to refuse	Warum weigerst du dich, die Wahrheit zu akzeptieren? Translation: Why do you refuse to accept the truth?
verbieten Translation: to forbid	Du kannst mir nicht verbieten zu sprechen. Translation: You can't forbid me to speak.
vergessen Translation: to forget	Ich habe ganz vergessen, ihr Bescheid zu sagen. Translation: I completely forgot to let her know.
versprechen Translation: to promise	Versprichst du mir, morgen auch zu kommen? Translation: Do you promise me to come tomorrow, too?
versuchen Translation: to try	Ich versuche, daran zu denken. Translation: I'll try to remember it.
vorhaben Translation: to plan	Ich habe vor, eine Überraschungsparty zu organisieren. Translation: I'm planning to organize a surprise party.
warnen vor Translation: to warn against	Sie hatte mich davor gewarnt, die Stelle anzunehmen. Translation: She had warned me not to accept the position.

Verbs for expressing opinions, decisions, or hopes


Verb	Example
entscheiden Translation: to decide	Er entschied sich, in seine Heimat zurückzukehren. Translation: He decided to return to his hometown.
gedenken Translation: to think	Gedenkst du, morgen auch zu erscheinen? Translation: Are you thinking of showing up tomorrow too?
glauben Translation: to think	Ich glaube, mich zu erinnern, dass du das sagtest. Translation: I think I remember you saying that.
hoffen Translation: to hope	Er hoffte, sie irgendwann wiederzusehen. Translation: He hoped to see her again sometime.
meinen Translation: to think	Ich meine, ihn im Café gesehen zu haben. Translation: I think I have seen him in the café.
scheinen Translation: to seem	Das scheint zu funktionieren. Translation: This seems to work.
wissen Translation: to know	Ich weiß mir nicht anders zu helfen. Translation: I don't know how else to manage this.

es anstrengend finden Translation: to find hard	Manchmal finde ich es anstrengend, deiner Argumentation zu folgen. Translation: Sometimes I find it hard to follow your reasoning.
es erstaunlich finden Translation: to find amazing	Fandest du es auch erstaunlich, ihn ohne sein neues Auto zu sehen? Translation: Did you also find it amazing to see him without his new car?
es gut finden Translation: to find good, to like	Findest du es gut, lange zu schlafen? Translation: Do you like to sleep in?
es optimal finden Translation: to find optimal	Ich fände es optimal, genau jetzt aufzuhören. Translation: In my opinion, it would be best to stop right now.
es schwer finden Translation: to find difficult	Ich finde es schwer, ihr zuzuhören. Translation: I find it difficult to listen to her.
es super finden Translation: to find great	Wir finden es super, endlich wieder Deutsch lernen zu können. Translation: We think it’s great to finally be able to study German again.

erstaunlich sein Translation: to be amazing	Es war schon erstaunlich, ihn ohne sein neues Auto zu sehen. Translation: Are you thinking of showing up tomorrow too?
gut sein Translation: to be good	Es ist nicht gut, früh lange zu schlafen. Translation: It is not good to sleep in.
optimal sein Translation: to be optimal	Wäre es nicht optimal, genau jetzt aufzuhören? Translation: Wouldn't it be best to stop right now?
schwer sein Translation: to be difficult	Es war schwer, ihr lange zuzuhören. Translation: It was difficult to listen to her.
super sein Translation: to be great	Es wäre super, endlich wieder Deutsch lernen zu können. Translation: It would be great to finally be able to study German again.
