Study Resource: Brazilian Portuguese adjectives that change their meanings depending on their position

The following Brazilian Portuguese adjectives have one meaning when used before the noun and another meaning when used after the noun.

A reunião será em um determinado dia.
Translation: The meeting will be on a certain day.

diferentes

various/several

Eles têm diferentes carros.
Translation: They have various cars.

different

Eles têm um carro diferente.
Translation: They have a different car.

unique/pure

Translation: She has a unique dress.
velho

former/long-time

Nós temos uma velha amizade.
Translation: We have a long term friendship.

old

Eu tenho um amigo velho.
Translation: I have an old friend.
verdadeiro

true/rightful

A notícia era o verdadeiro retrato da situação.
Translation: The news was the true picture of the situation.

genuine

É uma joia verdadeira.
Translation: It is a real gem.

  • *The adjective novo/a(s) can also mean “young” when it appears after the noun:

    Eles são novos.
    Translation: They are young.

  • **The adjective determinado after the noun can also mean “determined”:

    uma pessoa determinada
    Translation: a determined person
