Study Resource: Brazilian Portuguese conjunctions that can trigger the subjunctive

The following conjunctions often trigger the subjunctive in Brazilian Portuguese.

Translation: even though
Ainda que eu goste de pão, só vou tomar um café.
Translation: Even though I like bread, I’m just going to have a coffee.
a fim de que
Translation: in order to
Eles se mudaram a fim de que vivessem melhor.
Translation: They moved in order to live better.
a não ser que
Translation: unless
Ela vai sentir frio, a não ser que ligue o aquecedor.
Translation: She will be cold unless she turns on the heater.
antes que
Translation: before
Vá embora antes que você perca o último trem.
Translation: Leave before you miss the last train.
até que*
Translation: until
Não vou desistir até que aprenda a nadar.
Translation: I won’t give up until I learn to swim.
assim que*
Translation: as soon as
Assim que eu chegar no restaurante, eu te ligo.
Translation: As soon as I get to the restaurant, I’ll call you.
caso
Translation: in case
Caso vocês prefiram, podemos trocar a cor.
Translation: In case you prefer, we can change the color.
como se
Translation: as if
Ele falou como se soubesse mesmo a verdade.
Translation: He spoke as if he really knew the truth.
desde que
Translation: as long as
Desde que fiquem em silêncio, podemos levar as crianças.
Translation: As long as they keep quiet, we can take the kids.
embora
Translation: although
Embora esteja sem fome, vou jantar.
Translation: Although I’m not hungry, I’m going to have dinner.
enquanto
Translation: until
Minha mãe não vai dormir enquanto eu não chegar.
Translation: My mother won’t sleep until I arrive.
mesmo que
Translation: even though
Mesmo que eu comesse carne, não quero ir ao churrasco.
Translation: Even though I ate meat, I don’t want to go to the barbecue.
o que quer que
Translation: whatever
O que quer ele faça, é bem feito.
Translation: Whatever he does, it’s done well.
por mais que
Translation: no matter how
Por mais que eles tentem conversar, sempre acabam brigando.
Translation: No matter how hard they try to talk, they always end up fighting.
para que
Translation: in order to
Faremos isso para que você se sinta mais confortável.
Translation: We will do this to make you feel more comfortable.
se*
Translation: if
Se você souber de qualquer coisa, me avise, por favor.
Translation: If you know of anything, please let me know.
sem que
Translation: without
Eles saíram de lá sem que soubessem o caminho.
Translation: They left there without knowing the way.

*These conjunctions can be used with either indicative or subjunctive verbs.

indicative
Eles não desistiram, até que conseguiram ganhar o jogo.
Translation: They didn’t give up until they managed to win the game.
Ela aprendeu a ler assim que entrou na escola.
Translation: She learned to read as soon as she entered school.
Se eles compraram a casa à vista, é porque já tinham o dinheiro.
Translation: If they bought the house in cash, it’s because they already had the money.
