Activities: “What are the main differences between Brazilian and European Portuguese?”

Activity 1: Make it Brazilian!

Marta is from Portugal, and the text below describes her routine. Read it through and notice that the highlighted words reveal that she is using European Portuguese (you can find this vocabulary in our downloadable chart!).

Now imagine that Marta is Brazilian, and try to replace the European Portuguese expressions with their Brazilian Portuguese equivalents.

Activity 2: Using the progressive

Use the progressive in the sentences below, following the rules for first Brazilian, then European Portuguese, as in the example below. Please write all the sentences in the present continuous tense.

Example:

Eu (comer) uma maçã.

Brazilian: Eu estou comendo uma maçã.

European: Eu estou a comer uma maçã.

  1. Eu (comer) uma maçã.

    Brazilian: Ela no escritório hoje.

    European: Ela no escritório hoje.

  2. Nós (fazer) um bolo delicioso.

    Brazilian: Nós um bolo delicioso.

    European: Nós um bolo delicioso.

  3. Ana e Pedro (assistir) a um filme na TV.

    Brazilian: Ana e Pedro a um filme na TV.

    European: Ana e Pedro a um filme na TV.

  4. O cachorro (correr) no parque.

    Brazilian: O cachorro no parque.

    European: O cachorro no parque.

  5. Vocês (jogar) futebol na praia?

    Brazilian: Vocês futebol na praia?

    European: Vocês futebol na praia?

  6. Carla (ler) um livro interessante?

    Brazilian: Carla um livro interessante?
