The following are some common linking verbs in Brazilian Portuguese.


Verb	Example
ser Translation: to be	Ele é astuto. Translation: He is cunning.
estar Translation: to be	José está atrasado. Translation: José is late.
permanecer Translation: to remain	O tempo permanece frio. Translation: The weather remains cold.
ficar Translation: to stay, to be	Ele ficou chateado. Translation: He was upset.
tornar-se Translation: to become	O gato tornou-se o melhor amigo do cachorro. Translation: The cat became the best friend of the dog.
andar Translation: to be, to go	Ando pensativa. Translation: I am thoughtful.
virar Translation: to become, to turn	Márcia virou uma onça. Translation: Márcia became very upset.
continuar Translation: to continue	lhabela continua linda. Translation: Ilhabela continues being beautiful.
viver Translation: to live, to be	Marcos vive apressado. Translation: Marcos is always in a hurry.
