Honored Guests at the Mango Grove

Technion Group Photo Honored Guests at the Mango Grove
We were thrilled to welcome a distinguished delegation of students and professors from Technion-Israel Institute of Technology for an inside look at a growing software company in metro Detroit.

Mango Languages CEO Jason Teshuba spoke on the relationship between the technological progress being made in metro Detroit and that in Israel:

“People don’t think of metro Detroit as a center for technology and digital entrepreneurship, but we’re seeing it happen more and more as companies like Mango grow and expand. Much of our success mirrors what’s happening in Israel, in large part because of the incredible work done at the Technion. We hope that this cultural exchange continues to strengthen the bonds between those pushing the boundaries of technology around the world.”

The students; Marina Toger (architecture) and Guy Bershansky (engineering and medicine), along with Professor Zalman Palmor (the Technion’s deputy executive vice president for academic affairs); also shared their experiences about the value of their world-class educations and the vital role public universities can play as incubators for technology and business.

Start Up Weekend – Detroit

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of speaking to young entrepreneurs at Start Up Weekend in Detroit.   There were about 20 potential business ideas that were pitched on the first day, and the field was narrowed down to about 8 ideas through a voting process.  A group was formed for each of the selected ideas with the goal of creating a business plan to take the idea to the next level.   To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much because there was such a short period of time for the whole idea to be fleshed out and presented.  However there were two groups I talked to in more detail…I was very impressed and thought the groups and the ideas had some real potential.

Start Up Weekend is a fairly new event in Detroit, I can see this becoming much larger in the next few years.  It’s exactly what Michigan needs right now!

Oh Canada

bigstockphoto Stop Sign And Canadian Parliam 2695666 300x300 Oh CanadaWorking for a company in the Detroit area means we are neighbors with Canada.  We can look across the Detroit River and see Windsor (it is actually south Detroit – if you know the song, which is weird).

I remember as a little girl going across the bridge or through the tunnel and being able to spend my money on candy and get way more for my buck due to the exchange rate.  Going to Canada is a big part of our culture because it is so accessible.  We actually drive through Canada to get to New York.   Every year we share our Independence Day with Windsor and have an awesome spectacle of fire works!

We love Canada. It is a geographically vast and ethnically diverse country.  Canadian culture has also been greatly influenced by immigration from all over the world.  The Vancouver Olympics are certainly a great way to see how welcoming they are.

Canada’s two official languages are English and French.  Both have equal status in federal courts, Parliament, and in all federal institutions.

According to Wikipedia: English and French are the mother tongues of 59.7% and 23.2% of the population respectively, and the languages most spoken at home by 68.3% and 22.3% of the population respectively.  98.5% of Canadians speak English or French (67.5% speak English only, 13.3% speak French only, and 17.7% speak both).

Although more than 85% of French-speaking Canadians live in Quebec (French is the official language there), there are substantial Francophone populations in Ontario, Alberta, and southern Manitoba. Ontario has the largest French-speaking population outside Quebec.
