At the beginning of each chapter, you’ll be exposed to a short conversation, which you should be able to mostly understand by the time you reach the end of the chapter. When the dialogue first appears, it’s printed in English. As the speakers move through it, the words switch to the language that you’re learning, in my case, German.
For Jason Teshuba and his partners, language has always been about so much more than words. It’s about culture and having fun.
With that in mind, Mango Language instruction products were born four years ago in the suburbs of Detroit. Since then, the company under Teshuba’s leadership has doubled its sales each year and employees now number 200 worldwide, including professional linguists.
“We’ve always felt that it would be cool to learn different languages and bring them to life in a way that would interest our customers,” said Teshuba, 35. “It’s always been about the passion of language and culture for us.”
Mango’s digital products were first introduced in hundreds of libraries across North America and now are expanding to a wide range of consumer and educational products that include dozens of courses in 49 languages, including 15 English as a second language courses, each with about 10 lessons. “Mango Languages is an excellent resource that is not only great for public libraries, but teens will appreciate. Learning a new language is never easy, but it does get easier with practice and instruction. For high school students, this is one area that completely freaks them out, more so than any math or science class. Mango Languages is so accessible that it does not require any training for the user; libraries that subscribe to this program do not even have to train staff members because it is that intuitive. In fact, in many of the lessons, all a user really needs to know is how to access the lessons and the program practically runs itself. As mentioned before, Mango Languages is a great substitute for the Rosetta Stone Language programs since Mango bases their prices on the size of the community in comparison to a projected number is users, which can be incredibly pricey. “Mango Languages is an online language learning software that uses a fun and effective flashcard-type method to help you learn the basics of your chosen language. The software is extremely easy to navigate and the interface is rather simple. As soon as you open the program you choose your chapter and begin. I found it very easy to use. I chose to review Mango Languages in Mandarin, which is the most spoken dialect of Chinese. The software came packed with 10 chapters, which contained 81 lessons in total. Each chapter has a review at the end to recap what you were taught during the lessons in the chapter. During your lessons, you’ll be shown words or phrases (color-coded) that the narrator will have you repeat or remember. “My parents are bilingual, as are many of my relatives. I have tried all my life to learn how to speak the Italian language, and I must admit, I wouldn’t survive a day trying to get around in Italy.
I recently tried Mango Passport, a language learning tool that I downloaded from the Mango Languages website. I chose Italian, and I got to work.
What I really like about Mango:
-You don’t have to leave your house
-You can work at your own pace, unlike a classroom setting
-The set up is very effective – more on this later
-Kids love it
Finally, I found a language learning tool that is convenient for me. The set up of the Mango language lessons is very effective. You would really have to see it for yourself to understand how I am trying to explain it, but I will do my best to give you a good idea. You scroll through lessons. A little while ago, a friend forwarded me an e-mail with the subject FW: You may find this very helpful for some who are trying to learn Chinese language…especially because it is free. Free is good. I like free. So I opened the e-mail and saw that the URL was TryMango.com. I thought maybe someone had sent the wrong link for a minute because it sounded by the name like it was yet another Mangosteen or Tahitian Noni Juice type of thing that so many people seem to be into.
