Seeing Mango in Action

tiedye 200x119 Seeing Mango in Action

Seeing the Mango program in action will never get old.

This past weekend, members of the Mango Languages marketing department headed down to Atlanta, Georgia, in tie-dye t-shirts for a Travel and Adventure trade show where we had the opportunity to demonstrate our product to travel enthusiasts and professionals.  This being my first trade show since I started working at Mango, I was thrilled to see the program through the eyes of interested language learners of all ages and backgrounds.  Here are a few things I learned:

1. Age is just a number.

Seeing children walk up to our booth at the show and immediately begin to pick up on a foreign language within a few minutes of a demonstration was phenomenal to see. Also seeing a 70-year-old man, previously convinced he was too old to learn a language, pick up on it within a few minutes is even more amazing.

2. Language is personal.

Hearing stories from attendees about why they wanted to learn a language made me realize just how amazing an endeavor learning a language is. People genuinely want to connect with other people and cultures; whether it’s to feel connected to the rich art history on a trip to Paris or to finally have a conversation with their Spanish-speaking future mother-in-law.

3. People love tie-dye.

We proudly sported tie-dyed t-shirts at our trade show booth. Say what you want about tie-dye; deep down, everyone loves it.

So, what feature do you like the most in the Mango products? Are there new features you would like to see?

Let’s Talk About Organic Learning!

methodology mango v2 150x150 Lets Talk About Organic Learning! When I was trying to learn a foreign language in the past, there always seemed to be a rude awakening at the end of the course.  I could no longer acquire new information as soon as the course book ended, the audio tape finished, or the class was over. It was frustrating to know that I spent so much time trying to learn a language and couldn’t continue to build on what I knew after the intense learning method was over.

I wish Organic Learning was incorporated into the different language learning methods I used to try.

Mango’s organic learning lessons are designed to help users continue increasing their vocabulary and cultural insights outside of the Mango lessons! These lessons are focused on teaching you to ask a variety of useful questions and use vital communications that allow users to ask about a word they don’t know, request additional information about any given subject, get clarification from the person they are speaking to, and more. The more you implement organic learning, the more you’ll be able to learn after the end of the course!

Intuitive Language Construction integrates vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, culture, as well as comprehension and retention strategies into organic learning to make Mango a fun, easy, and incredibly effective resource for foreign language and ESL users!

We can’t teach you every single one of the thousands of vocabulary words that make up a certain language, but we can teach you how to find out this information as you use the language. For example, you may find yourself in Spain and not know the name for a specific fruit you want to buy at a farmer’s market.  After using Mango, you would be able to point to the fruit and say, “Come se dice (point to object) en Español?” which means, how do you say (this) in Spanish? (Literal traslation: What is this called in Spanish). Not only will you now learn the appropriate word, but this technique will allow you to engage in conversations and grow more confident in your communication skills.  It’s a win-win, if you ask me.

See it in action – try a lesson for free!

Mango Languages for K-12 Students

students 300x182 Mango Languages for K 12 Students Mango has been hard at work putting the finishing touches on our Educator Edition that is currently being made available to our K-12 customers and higher educational facilities.  This new edition has some very exciting functionality designed specifically with students and teachers in mind.  One cool feature is the ability to track students’ usage as they progress through the Mango lessons.

Teachers can segment their student population into virtual classrooms, making it extremely easy to track different groups of students. They can name their virtual classrooms any name they wish and view small portions of students with whom they are actively involved.  Once inside the virtual classroom, each student has their own set of statistics to view including which language they are using, which lessons they have attempted, and how long they have spent on each lesson.  Teachers now have the ability to assign Mango as homework with our unlimited remote access feature, and they can actually see which students are completing the selected lessons!

This is just one of the features that makes our Educator Edition such an effective tool to help teachers share their love of language learning with their students.  Teacher feedback was critical to the design of this unique interface, and it their suggestions have also put Mango to work on our assessment feature and custom lessons.  Think of all the tools you have available in your school for language learning:  can you think of other features that we could include to make it even better? What kinds of features do you wish you had had as a student when you were learning a foreign language in your school?

New Voice Comparison Feature!

VoiceCompare smallcrop 300x96 New Voice Comparison Feature! We are excited to announce that on Monday, Mango launched our new voice comparison feature.

This feature is automatically included in your current subscription at absolutely no charge!

Voice comparison helps users improve their speaking skills.  It’s completely integrated within each Mango Basic Lesson (currently not in the Complete version).  All you need is a microphone and a passion for perfectly proper pronunciation!

This is how it works:  after a user completes a slide, the voice compare button will appear.  They can then record their voice and play it back to hear themselves speak.  In addition, they can align a visual representation of their recording with the native speaker’s version for comparison.  Users may adjust their pronunciation until it lines up with ours–they’ll be speaking like a native in no time!
