Learn Greek

bigstockphoto Scene Of Greece 311105 300x232 Learn GreekGreek is not a widely spoken language and it may not give you the passport to learning other languages but it merits a seat in the pantheon of languages because it is one of the world’s oldest recorded living languages and because many words in English and other languages have been derived from Greek.

Greek is spoken in Greece, and it is one of the two official languages in Cyprus. It is also spoken by emigrant and minority communities in Germany, the USA, Australia, Canada, the UK, and in the neighboring countries Albania, Turkey, Southern Italy, as well as in the countries around the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. All in all it is spoken by about 14 million people.

It belongs to the Indo-European family of languages and it is an independent branch of it. According to some historical linguists the peoples in the plains of Europe and Anatolia spoke the Proto-Indo-European language until the 3rd millennium BC. At the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC this language had already been divided into the various Indo-European languages, one of which was Proto-Greek, the common ancestor of all dialects of Ancient Greek. Proto-Greek speakers came to Greece in the 2nd millennium BC. The first record of Greek is the script in Linear B on tablets in Mycenae dating from the 15th or 14th century BC.

Ancient Greece was the cradle of civilization and the means of expressing it was Ancient Greek. The great philosophical, scientific, and cultural texts of that era, which influenced the entire Western thought, were written in this language. It is only natural that a great number of Greek words has been borrowed in international science, philosophy, and technology vocabulary: words like mathematics, geometry, athletics, theater, philosophy, and many others have Greek origin. It is said that 12% of the English vocabulary is derived from Greek.

Ancient Greek has undergone many changes in phonology, morphology, syntax but the language was never interrupted and, although Greeks today cannot understand Ancient Greek texts without some help, the similarities are more than obvious and many words have survived unaltered as they were in ancient times. For example, the word for “child” was “pes” (“pedos” in genitive) in Ancient Greek and it is “pedi” in Modern Greek.

Most interesting is the search of the origin of words and how they changed meaning through the ages. For example, did you know that the word “enthusiast”, of Greek origin of course, comes from the Ancient Greek word “entheos” = en (in) + theos (god) and meant having or being inspired by divine ecstasy?

Having said all that, learning Greek, apart from giving you a means to communicate with the Greeks who live in the beautiful place you are going to visit, will also give you a better insight in your own language.

The Conscious vs. Subconscious in Language Learning

bigstockphoto D mind 5916388 225x300 The Conscious vs. Subconscious in Language LearningWhether you are learning a second language or producing and selling language learning materials, it pays to understand some of the factors that influence second language learning. This is the first of a few short installments on the topic of second language learning.

University of Southern California linguist Stephen Krashen has identified two main modes of picking up a language — conscious ‘Learning’ and subconscious ‘Aquisition’. Language learning means a rule-based approach to new languages and is common in classroom settings. Teachers present students with grammar and pronunciation rules and then give examples of how these rules play out in real life. Language Aquisition, on the other hand, is most commonly identified with immersive language learning. Imagine, for example, an immigrant child who spend hours each day with her peers and absorbs (or ‘aquires’) the new language.

According to Krashen, the most effective language study focuses on language aquisition rather than grammar rules. When students are actively engaged in speaking and listening their focus is on the message being communicated rather than the form of the communication. Successful students know their grammar but they don’t use rules to form the sentences they speak. Rather they have developed a feel for the language that lets them create sentences more organically. Their knowledge of grammar is used sparingly, to do some last-minute editing before the words come out of their mouths. This function of the grammar is commonly termed the “monitor” since it monitors, reviews and edits what the mind produces.

What does this mean for you? If you are learning a second language, put yourself in situations where the focus is on conversation and communication. Don’t ignore grammar, but don’t worry if you don’t know the perfect way to communicate your thoughts. The process of interacting with native speakers is as important to your success as any language book you study.

Learn Russian

bigstockphoto Russian Passport 1024428 300x200 Learn RussianRussian is the most geographically widespread language of Eurasia, the most widely spoken of the Slavic languages, and the largest native language in Europe. Russian belongs to the family of Indo-European languages and is one of three living members of the East Slavic languages, the others being Belarusian and Ukrainian (and possibly Rusyn, in Ukraine considered a dialect of Ukrainian and recognized in some countries).

The Russian language is primarily spoken in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Belarus, and, to a lesser extent, the other countries that were once constituent republics of the USSR. During the Soviet period, the policy toward the languages of the various other ethnic groups fluctuated in practice. Though each of the constituent republics had its own official language, the unifying role and superior status was reserved for Russian. Following the break-up of the USSR in 1991, several of the newly independent states have encouraged their native languages, which has partly reversed the privileged status of Russian, though its role as the language of post-Soviet national discourse throughout the region has continued.

Russian is the official language of Russia. It is also an official language of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and the unofficial but widely spoken language in Ukraine. There are several opinions on how many dialects that Russia has. Some say two and some say three all based on regions.

If you get ambitious you could try Russian, once you have learned Russian you can begin to communicate with other Slav speakers.

Learn Spanish

bigstockphoto Spanish Professor 14217362 300x199 Learn SpanishSpanish is the native language of 339 million people in the world. In addition to Spain, Spanish is the official language of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. In addition, it is widely spoken in several other nations, including Canada, Morocco, the Philippines, and the United States.

Mexico contains the largest population of Spanish speakers. Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. While all Spanish dialects use the same written standard, there are important variations spoken among the regions of Spain and throughout Spanish-speaking America. One major phonological difference between Castilian, broadly speaking, the dialects spoken in northern Spain, and the dialects of southern Spain and all the Latin American dialects of Spanish, is the absence of a voiceless dental fricative (/θ/ as in English thing) in the latter.

Spanish is one of the Romance languages in the Italic subfamily of the Indo-European language family, and within Spain, and has two major dialects: Andalusian and Castilian. Many other dialects exist in other geographical areas, namely North and South America. Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese are essentially dialects of the same language. If you learn one, you can learn the others. If you learn Spanish, you open the door to the culture, music, history and possible business dealings with 800 million people in 60 countries, including the US and Canada.

10 Misconceptions of Language Learning

bigstockphoto Think Alphabet 3712600 300x300 10 Misconceptions of Language LearningMany people want to learn a foreign language but think that they will never be able to due to 10 misconceptions.

1. People generally believe that only children can learn second languages quickly and easily. Current research indicates that children have no biological advantage in learning languages, most second language theory suggest we all have the Language Acquisition Portal in our Brains. Additionally, research says that adults understand vocabulary and learning techniques that can assist them in learning a second language.

2. Generally, people believe the younger the child, the more skilled he or she will be in acquiring a second language. Research has found that older children are better language learners in a school setting, but younger child may have an advantage in learning correct pronunciation.

3. Many people think that we all learn a second language in the same way. Different learning styles and cultural communication methods have an impact on language learning, just as they do on other types of learning.

4. We only need to speak English, everyone does. There are over 6,000 languages in the world. Some are more important than others, not better or more advanced, just more important. Why? Because they are spoken by more people, in more countries.

5. You took a language in High School – You don’t need to learn a language. According to one Canadian survey, after 12 years of daily French classes, only one high school graduate out of 147 (0.68%) achieved “intermediate” proficiency. Another survey of immigrants learning English in the US showed that “classroom instructional hours” had little impact on progress.

6. Language learning is difficult. It is only difficult to learn a language if you don’t want to. Learning a language takes time, but is not difficult. It is the way languages are usually taught that makes language learning hard to like.

7. You have to have a gift for learning languages. No you don’t. Anyone who wants to, can learn. In Sweden and Holland most people speak more than one language. They can’t just all be gifted at languages. Language learning it is attitude, not aptitude, that determines success.

8. You have to live where the language is spoken. Some immigrants to North America never learn to speak more than halting English. Yet we meet people in other countries who speak flawless English. With the Internet, language content is available to anyone with a computer, where you live is not an obstacle.

9. To learn a language you need formal classroom instruction. Theoretical grammatical explanations are hard to understand, hard to remember, and even harder to use. Drills and exercises can be annoying to most people, especially adult learnersa. Learning at your own pace and with a focus on your learning style in mind can help you learn a language easier.

10. You would love to learn but don’t have the time. Once you get started, even 10 or 15 minutes a day will soon grow to 30 minutes a day, or one hour. If you believe you will achieve significant results, and if you enjoy doing it, you will find the time.

What is holding you back from learning a foreign language?

Learn Chinese

bigstockphoto Great Wall Of China 2647781 300x223 Learn ChineseDid you know that there are more people in China that speak English than there are Americans? The need to learn Chinese has certainly increased over the last two decades as China’s booming population and increasing wealth have become more integrated in the global economy.

The People’s Republic of China is one of the world’s oldest civilizations. According to Wikipedia, Most languages in China belong to the Sino-Tibetan language family, spoken by 29 ethnicities. There are also several major linguistic groups within the Chinese language itself. The most spoken varieties are Mandarin (spoken by over 70% of the population), Wu, Yue (Cantonese), Min, Xiang, Gan, and Hakka. Non-Sinitic languages spoken widely by ethnic minorities include Zhuang (Thai), Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur (Turkic), Hmong and Korean.[37]

Classical Chinese was the written standard in China for thousands of years, and allowed for written communication between speakers of various unintelligible languages and dialects in China. Vernacular Chinese or baihua is the written standard based on the Mandarin dialect first popularized in Ming dynasty novels, and was adopted (with significant modifications) during the early 20th century as the national vernacular. Classical Chinese is still part of the high school curriculum and is thus intelligible to some degree to many Chinese.

Mandarin Chinese is spoken by over one billion people. Chinese origin words account for 60% of Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese vocabulary. Knowing Chinese will help you learn these languages too. Chinese culture has influenced the world for thousands of years with its art, philosophy, technology, food, medicine and performing arts. Today China’s economy is booming. Chinese seems well worth learning.
