Mango is FREE

January 28, 2008 |

Yes.  That’s right.  Mango is FREE.  We have received emails from a number of you implying that you are unaware of the fact that Mango is still free.  When we launched on August 31, 2007, we gave away every feature in every lesson in every language for free.  We are still giving away a ton of free content and features although it will be scaled back from what we were offering before.

What do I get for free?

  1. Learn over 1,100 common high frequency words in your new language.  This is available in every one of our 11 language courses.  As new languages become available, you will have access to those as well.
  2. Learn grammar the natural way and learn to put those words together to engage in real and meaningful conversation.
  3. Color coded translations for phrases and sentences so that you can clearly see what words and phrases in your new language actually mean in your native language.
  4. Understood translations so that you sound natural when speaking your new language.
  5. Literal translations so that you understand the literal meaning of the words that you are speaking and build a stronger vocabulary.
  6. Native male and female voices clearly pronouncing words and phrases so that you can learn to understand native pronunciation and so that you can learn to speak like a native.
  7. The first 5 lessons of every course will have the Pro level features for free.

I’m surprised to login today and found the notice about CHARGING beginning Feb 5th. Does that mean the FREE version will have LIMITED functionalities then? Please reply as i wanna intro it to my friends.

Compared to what is on the website now, the free version will have fewer features. We will be posting a detailed explanation on what is going to be free and what is not in the next day or so.

    Hello Mango team,

First, thank you for the wonderful job, really, Mango is a great tool for those interested in learning a new language and without the time to take conventional classes.

Question: I’ve purchased Mango on the go and would like to know if the updates will still be available.

Suggestion: The learning process involves much more than sound and it would be very helpful, I mean REAllY great if the slides contained graphics (e.g. pictures, animations, etc). As a visual person that I am, it makes the learning so much easier when I am able to associate sounds/situations such as the lessons with my visual memory. I hope this is a good suggestion.

Estou ansioso, todos os dias eu abro o mango para ver se saiu o esperado curso, quero ser um dos primeiros a postar isso. :)

Neto, muita gente vai adorar essa notícia.

I think you should make clear what you will offer for free and what you will not.

In addition, I hope you will make a package available for those who want to learn several languages, at little additional cost compared to a single language.

Considering that there is only so much material available, I find it somewhat strange that all subscriptions you will be offering are for a limited time. I would prefer a package similar to the previous “Mango on the go” where you can purchase lessons that you have full access to in the future.

  14. Mango Language online lessons--still free | chinese4biz on February 4, 2008 9:23 am

[…] Mango Languages, which launched last August, is assuring people that it’s still offering free language lessons (including Mandarin). Mango used to give away all of its lessons, now although you have to pay for some of the content, there’s still a ton of free stuff: […]

I think Mango Languages is a great website, the way it presented to newbie is awesome, I learn a great deal of it compare to a lot of resources. However for a serious learner I feel that there should be lessons to bring us to another level. 100 lessons is not enough, just wonder if Mango team has any plan to make more lessons for the current languages?

  16. Jason on February 5, 2008 2:01 pm

http://www.mangolanguages.com/main/compare contains a comprehensive chart of what we offer with the Free, Basic and Pro subscriptions.

To answer Astrocytes, we do plan on increasing and enhancing the language learning resources that are available for the current languages so that you can advance to the next level. But, don’t underestimate how proficient you will become upon completion of all 100 lessons. At that point you will be very well equipped to expand your learning by talking with others.

    Hello,

I just had a look at your website and went through some of the lessons you offer for Japanese. But before I start to praise the fantastic work you have done with the structure of the course as such, let me thank you for your generosity to offer so much content for free. I really mean this, there are quite a few sites out there that do not offer half the material one can find here and yet charge from the “very first word on”.
I have been studying Japanese for a year or so now, I’ve also been to Japan for three months and am currently using about half a dozen of different other language tools (audio CDs, CD-ROMs, books, podcasts, etc.) and I still find your lessons very useful.
Also, the voices of the speakers are really pleasant which makes listening to them a lot of fun.
I’m somewhat of a “language addict”, both by profession (I work as an interpreter and translator) and for fun. I hope you’ll keep up the great work. I’ll definitely recommend your site to other people.

I’m planning on going through the first 50 lessons and then buy a subscription to the other half of your course.

    Best wishes,

    Robert

P.S. Since my mother tongue is German, I guess I should check out your German classes to see what they look (and sound) like to a native speaker;-)

  18. Robert on February 8, 2008 6:28 am

    Hi,

I’m back again;-) Just listened to your German lessons. I think I know the male speaker’s voice (I’ve heard him on some other programs). Both the content and the way it is presented look and sound very natural. The speakers are obviously German (I’m Austrian by the way;-) and pronounce the words very clearly. It’s fun to listen to them, even for a native speaker (always considering, of course, the fact that the speed with which they speak is adapted to foreigners learning the language). Great job.

People who complain about the price of the premium features don’t realize something: at $10 a month, if you take 3 months to finish all the lessons, you will learn 2,200 words for about 1 penny a word. This is a pretty good deal when you compare this product to other products such as Pimsleur, which teaches at a rate of almost $3 a word.

  20. Astrocytes on February 14, 2008 6:04 pm

The price is ok, I wouldn’t mind paying for it. It is just that there are no follow-up lessons that really bother me. I don’t want to just learn those 100 lessons and not having anything more.

  21. mahnaz on February 17, 2008 10:26 am

Thank you so much for this job. I have learned 6 lessons in Germany very well.My 6 year old daughter has learned them too and we both like it very much.Because we live in iran we cannot open an account for all of the lessons .please reply what i can do to learn more.

Just wanted to drop a note. I’m an ESL consultant usually doing material design projects, and wanted to let you know that your course (based on the two lessons in Mandarin Chinese I’ve been through thus far) is among the best-designed I’ve seen. The platform is really smooth, too–I’m running it from Firefox on Ubuntu with no problems–and your visual design is fantastic: clear, uncluttered, appealing. But best of all, I’m delighted to see how well you’ve presented the lessons, with clear systematicity, good redundant practice, breakdown of language into parts that can play alone as well as in the whole sentence, etc. Really good work.

There were still small bugs in the two Chinese lessons I took, but in my work as a language teaching consultant I rarely see such well-designed lessons. And 100 lessons for free: hope this pays off well for you, and kudos to you all. (Now I’ll have to go check out the ESL lessons you’ve got. ;) )

  23. Gloria on March 6, 2008 10:40 pm

I really hope that the free lessons will be still 100 instead of 50!!!

    Pla~~~~~~~~~~
